Our Story – Historic Manchester Landmark Reimagined

Built in 1858, Mackie Mayor stands as one of the two remaining original buildings from the former Smithfield Market complex, which was once believed to be the largest market site in Britain at the turn of the century. Named after the then Mayor of Manchester who first opened its doors, this Grade II listed building served the city as a thriving fresh produce market for over a century.
As market trading declined through the years, Mackie Mayor closed its doors in the 1970s. The building briefly reopened as a skate park in the 1990s before falling into neglect and disrepair. For decades, this architectural gem sat abandoned, waiting for its next chapter.

In 2017, that chapter began. The team behind the award-winning Altrincham Market and Market House – Market Operations, led by Nick Johnson and Jenny Thompson – took on the ambitious challenge of breathing new life into this historic space. Through careful restoration in partnership with Muse Developments, Mackie Mayor was lovingly transformed from a derelict shell into a bustling urban food hall that honors its heritage while celebrating contemporary food culture.
